Christmas = Spring Cleaning

Am I the only one who gets the urge to purge after Christmas? We didn’t receive a lot of gifts this year (my side of the family opted to not exchange gifts except to give for my kiddo and my little sister – the parents wanted to make it equal, since the older sis and I got gifts until we were 30 [although technically I was 29…], the little sis should receive the same) and the hubby’s side gave a lot for the kiddo and just a few for each of us.

The hubby has an incessant need to hold on to almost everything.  I have a little rule, if we haven’t used it in, oh say 3 years, we can get rid of it.  Him, on the other hand, will hold onto it FOREVER. There is a really big can of protein powder from his “heavy” lifting days that expired in 2001 that he cannot get rid of.  In fact, he had two of these things, but I threw one of them out 2 years ago and he hasn’t even noticed…

Let’s just say that he went to the garage to work on a project and I put multiple things that I had been “saving to throw out” for a year – mainly terrible Christmas presents from a few years back.  I know, I know, but I am going to donate them to a second hand service as they aren’t bad, we just will never use them.

But I guess the worst thing about my Christmas vacation is that it was cut short.  The business partner could not make it into work this week.  They gave me little to no notice about it (although there were signs earlier on that I won’t get into).  I wasn’t in town for the last few days but it was a staycation so to speak so I was only two hours away, but drive drive I did this morning on these kinds of roads:

I mean not bad considering it was 9:00 am…

Back to the grind 😉

Lessons to Learn Two Days before Christmas

Lesson 1)

Do not wrap your presents for everyone and place it under the tree when you have a 18 month old.  Otherwise, you will have to do it multiple times:

Lesson 2)

Ask your cell phone provider if you can have a demo of one of their phones.  Hubby updated his phone and got one for the kiddo too.  Kiddo loves it.

Also, the pantry doubles as kiddo’s office.

3) One starts to question the validity of global warming/ice age.  The entire weekend it was -30 give or take.  Tomorrow and potentially Christmas?

It really isn’t so bad.  Almost flip flop weather right??? No, only if I want frost bite…
Happy holidays, hope everyone is ready for it!

Five on Friday – Dec 20/13 Version

1) We met Santa yesterday.

We waited not too long to get onto Santa’s lap.  In fact, I was quite astounded that hardly any kids had a ‘bad’ experience ie. cry loudly.  When we got to the front of the line, the hubby was first holding the kiddo, so i decided I should let him put kiddo on Santa’s lap.  Hubby had a different idea, let kiddo walk to Santa instead.  I see kiddo get a little freaked out and start to back up beside Daddy, so I grabbed Kiddo and placed him on Santa’s lap.  Cue major scream fest.  Boy loves his momma:

He didn’t calm down for quite some time.  He held on to me so tight for like 30 minutes, it was cute and well, funny (sorry kiddo!)

2) I’ve been itching to race – I love the medals from races.  So I have been looking up what will be in store for 2014.  I do see a half marathon potentially in my future (and in February too)

3) Speaking of running, I’ve been amazed at what I’ve been doing on the treadmill.  I’m trying to increase my mileage base, but of course steady state miles on the ‘mill are boring so I have been doing 1 minute 6 mph, then 1 minute 7 mph, for 10 minutes, then the next ten I will to the higher on at 7.7 mph, then for another 5 minutes do it at 8 mph! And then if I still feel like watching more of the program I’m watching, I’ll slow down to about 5 mph and do hills – got to keep the legs ready for ‘real running conditions.”

4) I wrote out a slightly shortened 9 week intermediate half marathon training plan and taped it on the wall.  I believe I will actually follow all the points on it this round (like mile repeats, speed work, running at your projected half marathon pace etc.).  I didn’t do that with my first go around and yes I had a great pace anyways but it’d be nice to complete runs faster!

5) We bought two new movies last night when we were at the mall and hubby watched both of them last night WITHOUT me… I know there is a lot of wrong in that picture but seriously, one alright I’m okay with that, but both that were supposed to last us through the weekend!?

18 Months

Although he turned a year a half last week, I wanted to wait until we had his 18 month shots and exam before posting to get all his deets!

I would like to begin this post about sleep.  We have finally worked through the sleep issues.  Kiddo normally goes to bed between 7/7:30 and will sleep until 6:30 ish.  He has around 1 1/2 to 2 hour nap (sometimes less, hardly ever more than that).  I knew he wasn’t the best sleeper from day 1, many many months ago I came to terms with that and it has been fine. If I let “us” sleep in on the weekends, sometimes you do not want to even go down for your nap. [just realized I went from using the pronoun him to you… I’ll keep with the you]  You still need it and get very cranky towards bedtime on those days, I do too, I usually want to run during your nap instead of waiting til 8 pm to do it.  We are still doing one nursing session right before bed, but I will be cutting those out in the next few days.

Your personality has always been sweet.  Whenever I get home from work, “Up Up Up” you go into my arms and there is where you stay until I am done preparing supper.  You cuddle us so much, give anyone who wants one a hug and a kiss.  You do have several tantrums each day from simple things from me telling you “cannot play on the stairs it is dangerous” to “I have closed the drawer to the pots”.  You get very upset and cry out, this is something we are working on as I still have no idea how to handle some of those tantrums except let you cry for what seems like a long time.

Yes each baby develops differently, and I’m sure you really do say about 50 words right about now, I don’t really believe it – most are sounds of animals – the words to me seem rare.  I know you understand everything that I say from “let’s put this in the garbage” to “put your clothes in the basket” to “are you tired?”.  I cannot wait until we can have an actual conversation.  Recently you have figured out the word “Help.”  And i do like to help you out whenever you ask!

You still get angry at me for leaving in the morning for work.  I know you love hanging out with the nanny all day long, but you still continuously call out for me.  You know the sound of the garage door opener and are waiting for me at the top of the stairs when I come in.

You weighed in at a whopping 25.5 pounds and 31.5″ for length.  You have 14 teeth and another incisor coming in.  These incisors take forever to break through the gums.  You have always had a large head and with your new haircut it does look even bigger. Sorry, you got that from me, but it just means you are going to be very smart.  Your dad thinks you are not growing fast enough and you will be a shrimp [daddy is the shrimp of his family and he wants you to get the 6+ foot tall gene and his eye sight of course], but I think you are growing too fast! We have gone up in the pant size as your legs did grow this last little bit and it is too cold to be wearing ‘clam diggers’ even if we do spend every single day inside.

The Weekend – on a Tuesday

The weekend was quite relaxing. I did get to go into the city for a lovely brunch, had a great Eggs Benedict at a place that doesn’t have the best service.  About a year (or more) ago, we had gone there with about 6 adults, 3 kids (aged 7 mo, 9 mo, and almost 2 years).  The server was awful.  I understand some people don’t like kids, that is fine, but our kids were very well behaved (I don’t think the 7 & 9 mo old even chirped).  Sure the 2 year old had some tantrums, but the dad of that kid took him out quickly to quell the tantrums.  The server was so short with us and put on a XX% gratuity on it because we were a big table.  I had told everyone that I wasn’t going to go back to that place in a very very long time.  We didn’t have the kiddos with us and this place really is the best place for eggs benedict, so we tried it again.  The food always delectable, but at the end there when one of my friends was still finishing up her coffee – the server said to us to sit at another table to finish so they could get another table in.  Since we were done anyways, we just left.

You know how excited I was to go running outside? Well, big dump of lots of fluffy snow coupled with a heat wave, freezing rain, creating the world’s most slipperiest surface and winds of 90 km/hr gusts meant I did not do it… At least it looks pretty outside?

Someone had fun taking everything out of every drawer and stacking their own boots!

You know how I can’t wait until the winter solstice? Well, this weekend the kiddo has decided a 5 am wake up call is perceivably the best time to wake up.  Because I don’t want to start my day that early, we basically cuddle until 6 – a lot of times he is so squirmy, I can’t fall back asleep and I’m not so sure if he has fallen back asleep yet either.  So, I am in the dark for a very long time.  This was taken at 7:48 am, the full sunrise didn’t start until 8:36…

Five on Friday

1) Hold the phone, we are headed into a HEAT wave!!

Screen shot 2013-12-13 at 9.40.34 AM
Therefore, I am going to attempt to run outside in preparation of my outdoor run in four weeks.  I am charging my Garmin as we speak.
2) I get to go into the city for brunch with my ladies.  It has been way overdue and we love our brunches.  I absolutely love Eggs Benedict but can never do the hollandaise sauce on my own.
3) My day started at the bright (er, dark) hour of 3:50.  I had planned to get up at 5 anyways to run on the treadmill but luckily I did wake up that much earlier and ran on the ‘mill at like 4:30 as the kiddo decided it would be also great if he got up shortly after 5 as well.  Have to love days like this!
4) Speaking of dark hours, sure everyone is counting down the days to Christmas.  What am I counting down too? The time where winter solstice happens and we can start getting a minute or two of more daylight each day.  I hate going to and from work in the dark…
Screen shot 2013-12-13 at 9.51.21 AM
…. guess who learned how to screen grab!
5) I love my cuddler.  Sure at times I don’t because I need two hands to prepare supper.  And I always miss those times with a camera when he is super cuddly – I missed him giving me a kiss by like 2 milliseconds.
Have a good one.

Mental Note

I need to take more pictures.

I was looking through my phone as it holds so many memories over the last 20 months, and I have noticed that I haven’t been taking as much photos lately.  I know and I want to be putting more in here to break up the heavy worded paragraphs, but when I look at what I have taken photos of lately, there really hasn’t been any!  We had even put up our Christmas tree and I hadn’t even taken a single photo of that.   Well, the last few days, I have been busy taking photos!

Yes, the hubby had to get the most largest tree out there.  He even had to lob off the top just a bit so it wouldn’t rub up against the ceiling.  I keep telling him sometimes, bigger isn’t better, he always says after the fact “Maybe you are right”.

I made a little chicken paprika(sh?) basically chicken, sour cream and paprika, I’m sure there are other ingredients, but I didn’t look it up.  The kiddo and I enjoy our vegetables roasted. I roasted brussel sprouts and kohlrabi.  Yummy.

I did a sweaty 5.25 miles yesterday.   I sweat a lot. I’m trying to get into a 10 k running form as I will be doing a 10k race on January 11.  Yes, in the cold and in the snow. I don’t know why I am really!

The best way to eat your blueberries in the morning while mommy cooks breakfast is on the floor!  I made an omelet this morning, I am still having troubles with our pans and I couldn’t flip the omelet correctly. Oh well, I don’t really care about presentation but about sustenance!

So there I go, a little more photo worthy of a post today.
